Don't throw your coat on the floor!

I've been posting about ways we are updating our 54-year-old "new" home and wanted to give you an inexpensive tip.

There are several doors to enter this home, but 98% of the time, we use the garage entry because of its convenience.

entrance from the garage to the den.
There's a nice coat closet at the front door, but nothing at the garage entrance.

What ends up happening, is we come in the garage door and walk through the dining room and kitchen, around to the front door, take off our coat and hang it in the closet, OR we toss it on the furniture or floor of the den (that's what we call the room right off the garage.)

MANY times, I (being so forgetful) walk to the garage door to leave, only to remember my coat - which is hanging in the closet next to the front door. 😒

During the warmer months, we plan to hang our coats in the garage, but IT IS COLD there now too! I cannot imagine being out in this weather, like so many folks without a home!
garage is right there!
Den is right there!
I decided to take matters into my own hands and come up with an idea to keep those few items at the ready, without adding more clutter.

One of my favorite inexpensive home stores, and one of the only options besides Walmart here at our new home, is Marshalls.  I found a small board with hooks for $7.99. Being in the middle of our empty nester season, it's just the two of us until Joe comes home in March. This has 3 hooks, plenty for our two coats and any accessories.

I learned this neat trick to hang art work with two hangers on the wall.  There are already a ton of nail holes in this paneling and I don't need to add more!

First lay the object face side down. Take a piece of painters tape and stretch it out across the back
so it is just below the two hangers.

Mark where you want your nails to go.

Pull off the tape and attach to the wall. You can eyeball it to see if it's straight, or use a level to determine on what line you want the item to hang. (I used a level since I am not very good at eyeballing, especially since I got these progressive lenses.) Hammer in the nails at the lines you made on the tape and hang the item.

Works like a charm and decreases stress too, as now I'm not running back to get my coat because I'm  usually running late already!

Have a great day!

Kelli
