Why a Red front door?

Bill and I have discussions about various decorating trends. Today, it was about the hot trend of painting your front door Red.

What started this exchange? Our home happens to have a red door. It was red when we purchased it last year, and we are in the middle of some do it yourself updates. One of the items on my list is to repaint the front door.

I believe a red door means all are welcome, just like the pineapple, welcome sign, or welcome mat. He believes paint companies started the trend to sell more red tinted colors! 😆

In our usual competitive fashion, we decided to "look it up", and that's how today's blog post was born.

Here's a photo of our front door.

Notice the two faces looking  out!
Our house is green and the red door is attractive, but a bit holidayish (is that a word?), and once the weather warms up a bit, it will be a different color.

Back on topic - what is the meaning of a red door?

As usual - there are many meanings:

1) Chinese Feng Shui, which are laws governing spatial arrangement and orientation in relation to the flow of energy, believes a red door brings positive, welcoming energy to your home.

2) Early Americans painted their front door red so tired travelers would know where there was a welcome place to stay and a warm meal.

3) The Bible tells us that during Passover, Hebrew families were instructed to paint their doorposts with blood in order to protect any First Born from the Angel of Death. A home with red on the door was "passed over" and those inside protected from harm.

4) In Scotland, people painted their door red when their mortgage was paid in full. A way to announce they owned their home, free and clear!

So guess I am right - again! Paint companies ARE NOT pushing the sale of red paint!

There you have it. A new front door color would be a great spring project. If you are up for the challenge, choose a color that is meaningful to you and your family.

Remember to wait for warmer weather to start this project, it may be too cold right now for outdoor painting. The temperature needs to be between 40-90 degrees if using oil-based paint, and between 50-85 degrees for latex or your paint may peel and crack. No painting in direct sun, and keep in mind that your door will be open, so try to start early in the day so you can lock up at night😴

And if you decide you don't like it - you can paint over it with a new color!

Have a great day!
