Product Review: Electric Tea Kettle

I recently wrote about my love for tea and how many fond memories are linked to this tradition.

I've always believed water must be boiled on the stove, not in the microwave or any other way. Honestly, I've never known anything else.

We recently visited our daughter in Japan, where tea is a part of life. Tea is made in the morning and drank all day long, just like we drink water or any other beverage.

Our daughter prepared tea with water boiled in an electric pot. I don't know if it tasted better to me because of the high quality of the tea, or our joy at spending time with her, but that tea had a wonderful taste.

When we returned home, we went back to our stove top kettle and it just wasn't the same quality. These are my gripes about the stove top kettle:

1) It takes a while for the water to boil and the kettle to whistle.
2) The kettle becomes soiled due to sitting on the stove while cooking other things.
3) You have to remain within ear shot so the water doesn't boil over, or you don't forget it's on and it boils dry. (As in, I am easily distracted 😵and might be in the middle of another project which takes me out of ear shot.)
3) It takes up valuable stove top space.

On a whim, we saw this electric kettle and decided to try it out.

We are thrilled with the electric kettle and, maybe it's just me, but the tea really does seem to taste better! The water boils in about 10 minutes and the kettle automatically shuts off, avoiding any fire hazard.

This particular electric kettle has a separate base, so you lift the kettle off of the base to fill with water or to pour. We unplug it when not using but leave it on the counter and the outside stays clean!

To clean the inside, use mild soap and water and rinse - that simple. Our stove top kettle had a removable lid in the center of the body with an opening just big enough to fit your hand to clean the inside.

We now have 4 burners available on the cook top!

There's not a huge difference between manufacturers, some kettles we looked at had a few more bells and whistles, but this model (which we picked up at K-mart) cost about $20 and it is perfect for us.

If you like a good cup of tea, soup, hot chocolate, or some other reason to boil water...this might be a fine alternative to the microwave or traditional tea kettle.
