Choosing colors for Knit & Crochet gifting.

These colors work well with Blonde hair.😊

Maybe you want to knit or crochet stylish winter hats, scarves, socks, or fingerless gloves for family and friends this year.  You may even feel adventurous with a blanket, a shawl, or a sweater!

I know I do! I love to knit socks, scarves, and shawls or crochet slippers and blankets for family and friends year round. And although I work with color frequently when dyeing yarn, I still find it difficult to choose the yarn colors that will look great on the person for whom I am creating a gift!

It sort of spoils the surprise to ask the recipient what color(s) they prefer - and a "favorite color" may not always be the one that looks the best!

I found some helpful information on how to match colors to your recipient's 1) eye color, and 2) hair color & complexion. It has really helped me and I'm certain it may help you, too!

1) Eye Color:

  • Green - all shades of purple, coral, darker shades of green, pale yellow.
  • Blue - beige, taupe, gray, cream, black, all pinks, deep blue, light green.
  • Hazel - dark neutral brown & gray, orange, lavender, burgundy.
  • Brown - khaki green, soft pink, rich blue, denim, gold.

2) Hair Color & Complexion:

  • Blonde/All complexions - bright, warm colors like yellow, orange, and rust. Neutrals of cream, taupe, or crisp white. All jewel tones. Stay away from pastels as they tend to desaturate blonde hair.
  • Brunette(brown)/Fair complexion - crimson, darker pinks, and black.
  • Brunette(brown)/Light to Medium complexion - pastels of blue, yellow, lavender, rose, and soft white. Darker bold colors of purple, olive green, mustard, and cranberry.
  • Brunette(brown)/Olive complexion -  olive or moss green, peach, yellow, apricot, orange, and red.
  • Brunette(brown)/Dark complexion - jewel tones, plum, white, orange, pink, yellow, ruby, royal blue, and blush.
  • Gray/All complexions - black, all grays, nude, sand, cream, med/dark blues, med/dark purples, ruby, med/dark green. No white, pastels, or brown.
  • Raven(black)/Light complexion - black, white, gray, beige, dark blues, all purples, and all greens.
  • Raven(black)/Medium to Dark complexion - red, all purples, green, orange, black, white, gray, beige, and yellow.
  • Raven(black)/Olive complexion - earth tones, peach, yellows, oranges, or reds.
  • Red/All complexions - all greens, earth tones, brown, beige, camel, white, blue, purple and perhaps a bright red.

Hazel eye color, brunette hair color, medium complexion = Deep Aqua Blue.

Again, this is just a guide and not everyone fits into these neat little catagories. That's what I cherish about creating with fiber - each piece is made with one special person in mind (such as my daughter above!). The gifts we make with our hands are truly made with love!

Happy Crafting!
